Forgetting About the Important Things in Life
There are way too many things in the world that we take for granted and in Farenheit 451, the author Ray Bradbury shows us a few of those opportunities we are missing out on and why neglecting these will lead to troubles in the future. He establishes a point where, he shows that reading is disrespected and how it can lead to bad decisions. They ignore the important things to succeed instead they make bad choices which leads to people being injured and killed. Throughout the book he shows his opinions and shows the lack of reading which compared to now with all the technology and little reading.
Ray Bradbury starts off his book by having the main character Guy Montag set the tone throughout the story. He was a fireman who burned and started fires rather than putting them out like he should. This shows how in the world he was living in they did not enjoy reading or nature at all. Montag watched a lot of television, and listened to the radio, and never took time for himself or did anything independently. At the start of the book, the way Ray Bradbury wrote described how he felt about the way people were at that time and how they were going to turn out and act later on in life. This would involve today’s world. We do not respect the activity of reading today. We choose to do what Guy Montag did, which was watch television, and now-a-days it is video games and social networking.
Another way Bradbury had expressed himself in Farenheit 451 is when Montag went to his wife for help on reading due to the fact that he was astonished by the idea of reading. His wife preferred him to watch more television instead of trying to grab a hold of the whole reading concept. By having this happen Ray Bradbury is showing that even when people in the world then and now try to read, the people around them do not enjoy it either and neglect it. They neglect this because of the fact that everyone in this revolution is obsessed with television. This shows one of Bradbury’s many concerns throughout the novel.
Continuing, Bradbury also describes in the novel the fact that he is worrying about the society and how it is going to turn out. There is a lack of activity and drive to do anything besides watching television and listening to a “seashell radio”; people do not interact and try to accomplish things for themselves. The joy of burning houses instead of putting them out, and preventing nature’s issues, and respecting the people in your society, shows Bradbury’s many different apprehensions with the world in the future.
Furthermore, Bradbury then shows the concern with the safety and lack of discipline that there and now. In this novel people drive cars extremely fast and unsafely. The show for concern with safety by Bradbury is introduced when the seventeen year old girl Montag met, in Clarisse McClellan, was killed after being struck by a car. However, before that Montag’s wife Mildred attempted suicide by swallowing a bottle of pills. Another demonstration for anxiety is they do not have any alone time in the book, this leads to stress and frustration, leading to the chance of suicide. This is where Bradbury’s concerns with the safety come into play.
In addition, in this novel, it’s shown that the people are clearly more interested with television, that they do not see the other things in life. This causes the problems that occur and the struggle to live without frustration. They do not communicate with others and they do not know how to interact with those around this is due to the fact that they are extremely obsessed with watching television and listening to music by themselves. This keeps them from wanting to get into reading and become familiar with it or trying to become more involved with others.
Furthermore Ray Bradbury is incredibly disturbed with the fact that nobody enjoys or wants to read. Which he believed would cause major issues when he was writing this novel. The fact that they burned books, left books that people wanted in fires, and showed a bunch of neglect towards the concept of reading. He shows that it can lead to many bad things and lack of many things as well. Bradbury is trying to show that reading is necessary in keeping people happy, smart, and much more active and positive in the society surrounding them.
Consequently, Bradbury’s personality in this book can be described as open but rather still in the same way. He, however, lets you know how he feels and what he thinks about the situation and position his opinion. He does this by using words that hide the anger and frustration and bring out the calm and composed way of describing what he thinks. He chose to express himself through his discomfort in the lack of respect for reading, as well as the problems we would face in the future. His points hidden through the words in the novel are without a doubt true if you look at today’s world, and society.
In the end, Bradbury has shown us what he believes is going to happen in the future of our world, with knowing what’s going on in the world around him at the time he was writing this excellent novel. He wrote this novel in a way of telling us the future and how things were going to be. Nobody was going to interact with each other, or want to read books. In addition to those he also by showing Montag burning books and not putting out fires how people won’t care as much for others and their property. He was warning us that our future could be in serious jeopardy.
