College Students and Choosing Courses
The argument of whether college should be able to choose their own courses throughout their college career is very intriguing. I agree with the fact that they should be aloud to choose their own courses because it’s their future and they know what they would like to do with themselves. Why not let them choose for themselves? A college choosing their courses for their students isn’t right in high school that’s okay because they’re making sure you assure the right requirements. In college there is one thing they could do for their students and that is to make sure they maintain the correct amount of credits.
As a college student you’re heading into the real world and should be able to make your own choices that will affect your future; therefore, you should be able to choose their own courses. A student will always know what they enjoy best and what they want to pursue their careers in and what they would like to study in. A college choosing the courses isn’t going to help the student very much. In high school you take all the correct courses insured by the teachers to maintain a well rounded education, however once you have reached college there is no need to for college to appoint the basic classes to students they should concentrate on courses only containing to their major, that is what they are going to be dealing with in the future. Another reason they should be allowed to choose and select the courses they would prefer is the money students pay for tuition. If a student is going to pay the amount of money colleges charge for tuition they should, at the least be allowed to choose their own course. Therefore they will be paying the colleges and professors to teach and inform them of things they will need for their future, instead of paying them to teach what they want to teach students. Allowing them to choose their own courses will bring more interest to students. They will no longer think they are wasting pointless time learning certain subjects.
On the other hand not letting college students choose their own courses can be a good thing in many ways as well. A college, just like high schools, has a curriculum that professors follow and they design that for a reason, to make sure the students get the correct education to be successful into the future. If you gave many students the right to choose their own courses many wouldn’t succeed because they would either not choose the correct courses required in their majors, neglect taking the basic math, English, and science courses. A college choosing the courses for the student can give them some information on how a certain student is going to succeed based off of their curriculum. If they were to choose their own courses a student wouldn’t be able to be informed if they are going the wrong way or not taking the right classes because there would be no curriculum. Letting students choose their own could be harmful in ways that they will no longer care about attendance, or grades, and they wouldn’t be challenging themselves enough by taking very simple courses.
All in all students can benefit and hurt from choosing their own courses in college and for their future. They don’t always know what the best course of action to take is for them and letting people more experienced be involved can only help benefit the student. However choosing your own way can bring more excitement, care, and want; they want to learn, they’ll want to come to class and not skip and overall enjoy being educated with the right courses.
